DIY Gender Reveal Cake

DIY Gender Reveal Cake

One of the things I absolutely love as a custom cake and cookie artist is being creative when it comes to really special projects.  I decided to take a real cake order and make it a DIY Gender Reveal Cake post!  One of my former employees from years ago messaged me on Facebook and wanted my help to announce the sex of their new baby.

The plan

When making a decision to do your own gender reveal cake there are a couple of things one should consider.

  • If you are the parents, who is this announcement for?  Your other children or friends and family.  This determines the size of the cake.  If it’s just for your immediate family or kids then a 6-inch cake is perfect.  If this is for a party of people the smallest I recommend is an 8-inch cake.
  • If you are not the parents, ask them if they would like to NOT tell you the sex.  Doctor’s offices will seal the outcome in an envelope they can give to the parents which can be delivered to you.  Some offices will call or mail you (with the parent’s written consent) as well.
  • What do you want the INSIDE of the cake to look like?  Is the frosting going to be white, pink or blue?  What color is the actual cake?  Are you adding colored sprinkles baked into the layers or sprinkled on the frosting?  Do you want candy to fall out of the center upon cutting?

Once you consider these things then we move into the creation of the project.

Pro DIY Tips & Instructions

  1. In the DIY version of this Gender Reveal Cake use a box of white cake mix.  Using white will help the dyed cake batter keep a vibrant color.  Use pink or blue gel color and add at the end of the mixing cycle of the cake mix instructions.
  2. For a 6 inch cake one box of cake mix is plenty.  This will give you 4 inches of cake.  (4-One inch tall, 6 inch wide pans) or (2-2 inch tall, 6 inch pans).
  3. For an 8 inch cake two boxes of cake mix will work.  Again, you will have 4 inches of cake.  (4-One inch tall, 8 inch wide pans) or (2-2 inch tall, 8 inch pans).
  4. Bake off batter according to the instructions on the box and allow to cool.
  5. Once layers are cooled (in the pans) about 45 min-1hour; Use a serrated knife to level off the top of the cakes (while still inside the pans.  Allow the pan to guide you.
  6. Remove layers from pans, wrap in plastic wrap and freeze for a minimum of 2 hours.

It’s time to decorate:

Notes

The American Buttercream recipe will yield a much more vibrant color then the Swiss Meringue or American Meringue buttercream.
